Described in writing and by the bartender as a Hoppy English Style Barley Wine, yet named an Imperial IPA??? Ill list it as an American Barley Wine since it seems to fit that style rather well.
Appearance: Bloody mahogany with almost purple-red hues. Very attractive. Thick, creamy head that reduces quickly to wonderful light lacing.
Aroma: Vanilla and oak are the predominant aromas. Spicy hops form a background.
Flavor: Matches aroma. Vanilla and oak flavors are very mellow and subdued. Alcohol is well concealed. Rich/semi-sweet vanilla notes are properly balanced with spicy hops. Some subtle dried plum flavors are barely noticeable.
Mouthfeel: Warming, balanced, heavy bodied, spritzy carbonation yet slightly chewy. Only mildly bitter.
Drinkability: High. This is an easy drinker both as a barley wine and in general.
Overall solid, but a bit lacking in depth and complexity. I would also expect more hop presence and bitterness in a beer billed as an IPA.
