Served in a snifter at Firkin.
Doppelbock + Templeton Rye barrels = what is in the glass, people. It pours a slightly murky sienna topped by a finger of wan cream foam. The nose comprises whiskey, light oak, and strong caramel. So far, I'd say the advertising has held pretty true. The taste brings in more of the same, though now the whiskey is stronger (and fruitier), and there is a distinct hazelnut character pervading the proceedings. The combination leads to a decidedly woody flavor, a panoply of the word's variations flying at my tastebuds from all directions. It's slightly off-putting, but not wholly. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light carbonation and a smooth, nearly creamy feel. Overall, a solid brew, one that shows that barrels can be kind to styles beyond the ones normally found aging in therein. That said, this one wasn't totally my cup o' tea, but it was pretty good.
