Three 3's Brewing Co. "S.S. Tide Pool IPA"
$10.99/32 oz. growler @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ on 8 December 2017
From their website: "The first in our Super Session series, Tide Pool pours light and hazy. A large whirlpool featuring Simcoe Lupulin powder, Belma and Amarillo is followed with a massive dry hop of Vic Secret, Azacca, Amarillo and Belma. The nose is a medley of tropical fruits. Flavors of citrus, lemon and spicy mango lead to a dry resinous finish."
Well I'm not getting all of those hops, but it is a hoppy beer. Hoppier than some APAs, maybe even many, but certainly not most IPAs. As for tropical fruit/citrus, yep, it's all there but nothing really stands out beyond the rest. Maybe the mango, but just slightly. It's a little bit "dank" as well. It's a somewhat yellow gold in color beneath a short head of creamy bright white that holds exceptionally well and leaves excellent lacing. It's fairly light in body, light-medium I guess, and gently carbonated (although that could have to do with the growler fill). It's only 4.6% abv and I wonder why they labeled this as an IPA when it really seems more like an APA. It's good though. The golden malt is nicely threaded through with hops rather than having the malt and hops bump up against each other, or as is often the case with IPAs these days, having the hops ride roughshod over the malt. A moderate bitterness balances it, and again, I have to question the IPA vs. APA thing as I think it's lower than standard APA bitterness levels. But I will say again, it's a good beer. I like it. It's nicely balanced and easy to drink. I might have called it a session IPA myself, but not an IPA, and that hurts its score with me. Still, this is my first beer from Three 3's and it shows great promise. If it had been labeled as an APA I'd have scored it at least a 4.25.
