la mort appears to be their series of belgian styles, they had this fine dubbel working while we were in, a rich looking crimson colored brew that holds a good inch of white head, more nitro looking than belgian, great lace and retention. it smells fantastic, toffee and chestnut and dried cherry with faint maple and plum elements, as well as a mellow belgian yeast strain, some spice to it, light anise and clove and brandy, and its all there in the taste, really as good as it smells. some bitterness in it which is weird, not used to that in this style, but it balances the sweetness thats here. i get a rich woodiness, heavy abbey malt, cherry juice and raisin, and more peppery yeast esters, red wine, and red apple. this has nice complexity in both malt and yeast aspects, and is really well made overall, far more interesting than most american made takes on the style are, and with a lot happening for its modest abv. having a belgian beer this good in here further establishes them as the best thing going down here. this is exceptional.
