A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2017, so it's a bit out of date. I'm hoping this style doesn't deteriorate too fast. Purchased a while back from the Brewdog webshop. Described on the label as a German hefeweizen brewed with 40% wheat and Bavarian yeast; hopped with Magnum, Huell Melon and Mandarina Bavaria.
A: Poured into a tulip. Bottle conditioned. A hazy amber hue with plentiful fine sediment and low carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam with good stability - this lasts for a while before slowly reducing to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing.
S: Aroma of grainy malt with hints of mild wheat, bread, earthiness, subtle yeast esters, leafiness, faint fruitiness and a touch of stewed husks. Underwhelming, and the yeast character that defines a hefeweizen is lacking.
T: Tastes of grainy malt with notes of wheat, husks, vague bread, earthiness, mild yeast, leafiness and a twinge of hop aroma. Pretty dry, followed by a modest bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with prickly carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent. Aftertaste of grainy malt, earthy yeast, subtle wheat, mild stewed hops and a hint of fruitiness.
O: Not brilliant; it just doesn't accurately capture the style. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are grainy, with earthy yeast and subtle stewed hops. Decent body. An insubstantial hefeweizen facsimile - I can't help wondering if they really did use the right yeast strain. As a beer it's drinkable but no need to hunt it down.
