A- This pours with little fanfare when it comes to the head....it starts out about a half finger in thickness, before noisily and quickly settling down to pretty much a non existent layer....just a pile of exploding columns of carbonation at the top of the liquid.....now I know how that looks! There is no lacing to speak of either, with only a watery layer covering the inside of the glass too. The coloration of the brew is a very dark brown, a Merc Black if you will. Overall this isn't a super impressive beer to look at but it's inside that counts right?!
S- There are some definite stout aromas about this one, with dark and milk chocolates, muted black coffee, dry biscuity notes due to the oat cake used, again, dry oat flakes, a semi sweet chocolate/black charred malt combination. The finish is clean, dry and Earthy, reminding me of a dry Prairie Summers' day....perhaps some root aromas, like a dry craft root beer....just a hint.
T- The flavors are much the same as the aromas let on, with plenty of chocolate, dry Scottish Oat cakes, some deep sugary sweetness, such as burnt brown sugar, high cocoa content dark chocolate powder, molasses and creamed French Press coffee. The one thing I am not digging with this one is a metallic flavor, that gives off a bit of a canned/tinned flavor but this doesn't make it horrible by any means. Overall not a bad chocolate oat cookie flavor!
M/O- The mouthfeel is rather thin for the style, with it being easy to down and there is a plethora of fine fizz bursting on the palate, so these characteristics are not what I would have expected or necessarily like in a stout. The alcohol is well hidden and the drinkability, while not quite what I would like, is decent....probably could handle another one of these in a sitting. I think this could be a good accompaniment in a beef/lamb stew recipe and is alright on it's own. Not my favorite but would give another shot to.
