Stout brewed with City of Saints Coffee. $8 a pint on-draught @ a bar in Brooklyn.
APPEARANCE: Head is khaki and lasts a good 5+ minutes, leaving a thick coating of lacing as it recedes.
Body, is, predictably, an opaque solid black. No yeast/lees are visible within.
AROMA: Rich vivid coffee leaps out if the glass, bringing a cold-brew java aroma to this otherwise classic chocolate and dark malt stout and accentuating its subtle roasted barley presence.
Suggests a dry impeccably balanced stout with a lovely coffee flavour. I can't wait to try it.
TASTE & TEXTURE: The coffee is nice but lacks depth, and I think I prefer regular Approved.
There's a nice dryness to this, which plays well to the roastiness of both coffee and barley. Creamy softness takes the edge off, keeping it drinkable and approachable. Medium-bodied and smooth.
Your usual chocolate/carafa and dark malt body is there at the heart of this ale.
The stellar balance of the base stout is compromised somewhat by the coffee flavour. A more bitter, roasty, earthy coffee presence would be preferable.
OVERALL: An enjoyable coffee stout, but where the original Approved is classic, this is more by-the-numbers. A beer I could happily drink all night, but $8 a pint is steep (not that price affects my rating) and the original Approved is easily superior by my estimation.
