"R&D Project Devils Laughter Sour Stout"
4oz pour for $3 on-draught at the brewery.
Pours an opaque black body and a creamy stout-like khaki colour head. Head retention is 2 minutes at best. Looks appealing.
Aroma hints at roasted barley, cream, chocolate malt, and faint bacteria, but no real sourness - just tartness. Aromatic intensity is mild; it's a muted aroma promising a beer with nice balance but limited depth.
Taste has some tart twang, but no sourness or overt bacterial intricacy. Drinks most like a stout, hitting faint notes of cream, chocolate malt, and dark malts. Shallow but balanced, tasting truly like a small beer...which is to say it makes one long to drink the real thing instead of the sloppy seconds version. Still, there's a hint of tart raspberry on the finish, which works well enough.
Creamy and smooth in mouthfeel. Wet. Unrefreshing. Medium-bodied. Well-carbonated.
Overall, its shallowness holds it back but all the elements are in place. With depth of flavour ramped up and more vividness and expressiveness to its flavours, this could be promising work. Drinkable enjoyable fare that feels restrained and timid when it should be going for the jugular.
