On tap at the brewery. Apparently this batch is using a CT grown Crystal hop varietal of which I am not familiar.

L: The beer is a brilliant pale straw color that comes to me with minimal head...I would say less than half a finger that quickly dissipates to a barely there ring around the perimeter of the glass with next to nothing in the middle of the glass. So the retention here is nonexistent and therefore leaves no appreciable lacing on the glass. That being said I didn't pour this and who knows how long of an interval there was between the pour and it being served. There is an abundance of carbonation streamers rising from the bottom of the glass; a very lively looking beer.

S: The nose is a bit subdued compared to most German examples. I get light grainy notes, a hint of grass, and a barely perceptible spice in the form of some black pepper.

T: On the front end I get some herbal notes in the form of fresh cut hay and grass. The mid palate presents light citrus notes supported by a malty sweetness and some hints of grain. On the back end I get some Saaz-like spiciness in the form of fresh ground black pepper and maybe cardamom? Not overly complex, but also not a limpwrist either. This fits the German pils profile pretty well for not using Noble hops.

F: It has a light body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is appropriate for the style being crisp with a nice clean and light dry finish. This one keeps you coming back for more.

O: I am not familiar with the crystal hop varietal, but to me it seems to mimic a noble hop profile pretty well. This is a good take on a classic German pils that the brewery calls an American Pilsner, but we don't have that category (which we should.) My only complaint would be that if judged against German examples it is a bit too sweet for the style. That being said, if you want a great, locally brewed example of a German pils using locally sourced ingredients you really can't go wrong with this one. Hell, even if you don't care about where they source their ingredients this is still a great pils.

Normally I'm not a big fan of German Pilsners and usually opt for their Bohemian counterparts but this beer was the first German pils that I truly liked. In fact I loved this beer!

The taste was sweet, yet had a decent hoppy earthiness to it. Very well balanced. There was also a nice bread-like malt presence, which I feel isn't too common with many German Pilsners out there. This beer was so well balanced; great mix of sweet, slight bittering, and malty. Awesome beer!
