Sampled a 12 oz pour of this beer during a visit to the brewery. I asked for a half pour since it was lunch and the server said it would be less than an inch shorter in the glass, which was a mini pint glass. Doesnt sound like a half pour, so I went 12 oz (full).
The beer arrives a pitch black coffee color with no head what so ever.
Beer is very thick in appearance and creates dark legs like a red wine when I swirl the glass but no lattice.
Aroma is rich sweet chocolate and fudge, super rich chocolate notes and totally dominated by this aroma. Maybe a little bit of roasted malt too, no hops and not boozy on the nose either. Nice nose, maybe a little one dimensional but its still appealing.
First sip confirms the thick chewy body and sticky coating on my palate. Very spacious and minimal carbonation adds to a soft and creamy physical presence, even with the thick body.
flavor is what the nose tells me. Lots of chocolate and rich fudge, makes me think of brownies a little. SOme light roasted notes and a bit of general sweetness too. Booze is well hidden, chocolate is well dominant. Hops are absent.
A big robust sweet stout that works for a nice Christmas beer. Booze is dangerously hidden and I finish my glass fairly quickly all things considered.
Glad to have tried this one, and would do it again.
