The Slowboat Brewpub is located in downtown Laurel, in what appears to be an old garage, possibly (the roof leaked horribly the night we were there in June 2019, but it was a tremendous thunderstorm). There is limited parking on site, but a public parking lot around the corner. In the brewpub, there are picnic tables, some cocktail tables, a short standup bar, a rear exit to a courtyard with more picnic tables, and a stage in the back left corner.
The bar offers a dozen to about 18 of Slowboat’s regular beers, variations, one-offs and cask experiments on draft, a couple of nitro taps, and cold brew coffee. Crowlers can be purchased for takeaway, I believe. Several coolers stock a great selection of beers from other Mississippi and regional breweries, and also soft drinks.
We were there for a special event, which included a barbecue food truck. Other than occasional food trucks, no food appears to be offered.
A huge number of games are stacked for use beneath the bar. Local, regional and traveling bands make appearances two nights per week, usually.
As a former Laurel resident, the advent of a brewpub to serve as a community center for the Free State of Jones is wonderful and frankly astonishing. If you are a local, stop by often, renew and be renewed. If you are a visitor, find Slowboat, meet the locals, and enjoy a tasty beverage and a live band.
