On tap at Fattey Beer Company in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells extremely licorice-heavy, which is odd as I don’t think that’s an added ingredient here. There’s also a charred ashiness to this that’s semi-unpleasant.
This is kind of harsh for such a basic seeming porter. It’s weighted down with herbal, earthy, licorice like flavors, with an unpleasantly ashy smokiness, and just no real sweetness of any kind to balance out these harsh off flavors. I’m not sure if it was intended to be this astringent and herbal, but it feels like it can’t have been meant to be this way.
This is thin, astringent, and lingering on the finish with a harsh aftertaste.
I really did not enjoy this one – it felt like a hearty swing and a miss to my palate.
