Imperial Black IPA hopped extensively with Cryo hops for maximum impact. Multiple dark malts lay a pitch black foundation of roasted, chocolatey goodness, then Columbus Cryo is added for some dankness, followed by Citra Cryo and Simcoe Cryo to add layers of citrus and tropical fruit. At 9% ABV it packs a massive punch, and definitely does not fall short on hop presence.

A: Pours an opaque black color. A two finger tan head rises with good retention and lace left behind.
S: Pine, resin, and citrus. Though not as aggressive as I would have thought. Not much malt presents either. The aroma is a little muted for me.
T: There it is, all the hops you could ask for. Citrus, grapefruit, pine, resin. Coffee grounds that are a bit bitter, mixed with a hoppy bitterness as well. Both of which linger.
M/O: A full body with moderate carbonation. Sticky, resiny, chewy, and a bit oily. This is a sipper for me, and while enjoyable for what it is, slower sipping than I would like.
To be honest, this has never been my favorite style. I'm a bit biases as I think the malty bitterness mixed with hoppy bitterness has always clashed for me. The aroma here, is a bit underwhelming for me too. Though overall, its well made for the style. I'll have it again on occasion, but nothing I'm seeking out.

Well the description says it won't fall short on hops, and I'd have to agree, there is a ton of hops flavor.
I personally get more than just a little dankness, it's danker than some beers whose entire existence is based around dank.
The citrus seems to lean towards the regular yellow grapefruits. With a little piney-ness for good measure.
Overall it's pretty in your face. But that's on par for the course for this style

Drank 9/22/23
Pour is quite black with a dense, tight, creamy lightly mocha head. 2.5 fingers worth. excellent retention.
Nose is resin, pine, dank hops. light citrus rind.
Taste follows. pine, citrus, dank hops layered over subtle roasted malt. some citra hop shines through. A little more toward the fruity hop character than i care for in the style - and is typical.
smooth body. easy to drink. not overly sweet. good beer

An unpopular style that I felt was executed really well. Notes of roasted coffee beans & malt contrasted by hoppier aromas of pine & grapefruit juice. The palate is balanced and drinks similar to a coffee IPA, finishing lightly bitter with a citrusy tail.

Pretty good. Not as hoppy as other black IPAs I’ve tried.

Oh how I wish this style would make a come back!
This is a nice example of this style. Purchased cans at the brewery. Poured into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown color with fluffy beige head and excellent lacing. Citrus and dark toast smell and taste. Earthy and rustic. Good balance between the citrus IPA and the dark roast flavors. Nice smooth feel. Definitely something I will buy again from this brewery.
