Teaming up with Florida area Black Gold coffee roasters, Calusa Brewing uses their java beans to elevated the otherwise traditional taste of their Baltic Porter to a brighter, darker and sharper character.
Black Blade draws in the eye with a dark garnet color, easily mistaken for black. As a dainty froth of creme floats the rim, the aromas of toasty sweetness, robust coffee, dark fruit and savory sherry aromas all decorate the nose, the taste leads with the maltiness of molasses, toffee, caramel and sorghum.
Sweetness swirls the middle palate and teases the sweet tooth with dark, savory and fortified malt sugars with a rounded taste of cold pressed coffee providing a smooth and roasty balance. Dark fruits of plum, dark berry, date and fig all seem to be condensed and grilled for a hint of port and sherry in a warming and balanced sweetness.
Malt forward, full bodied and finishing off-cloying, the Baltic Porter finishes sweet but supported. The balance of coffee lingers past the sweetness and fruity esters for a final frame of Black Gold's java flavor. Its a very pleasant coffee beer that doesn't rely on stout to give flavors a unique taste and feel.
