Right off the main road, their entrance is around the side of the building, opening to a surprisingly large, clean space with a wide open view of a rather large production area. Their medieval theme is on full display, starting right up front with suits of armor and statues, to tap handles, beer names, posters, and even the cute little shield-shaped flight boards.

Their selection spans the gamut of clean styles, and includes a few special releases promoting local fundraisers and awareness campaigns. The beers themselves have a good look, are fairly solid, but may be a little lacking in finesse and drinkability. Some, while not completely off-style, were a bit strong or harsh. They're serviceable, but can use some minor adjustments.

This place is kind of new, opened in 2015. Nice place, easy access. not to far off the beaten path to make your way to.

Vibe: building is close to some other businesses, but it is pretty quiet once you get there. Not located in a rural area, but in a kind of peaceful place. Walking in the taproom, there is medieval look, with rustic type decor, and a very chivalrous feel. The brewhouse is visible to your left, not hidden behind glass, but open for you to gander at. Bar is right as you walk in, with about 20 (maybe) taps, with around 16 flowing their own beer. Its a typical taproom, good ambiance, and some quiet music.

Quality: Beer here is awesome. They have a great variation in styles, from stouts, to IPAs, to ESB, to simple Ales, to a bourbon porter. There will be something on tap that you will like. My favs are the Champions Breakfast, Red Dragon, and Mosaic Tribute. All are fresh, well done, balanced, and awesome to drink.

Service: always on the spot. They staff well, and have more people at busy times, and a few less at slow times. Never have to wait for anything, unless there is a sudden inrush of growler/crowler fills. Everyone is nice, and loves to talk about beer. If you have something good to talk about, they will reciprocate. Awesome folks.

Selection: As above, there are usually 16 beers on tap. All are great, and you can definitely find something you will like.

Other stuff: One of my biggest sadnesses it that they do not have a kitchen. It would be amazing if they did. They do have small bags of snacks you can buy. Also, they are cool with you bringing in any food (or wine!) you want, as long as a few people at your table are drinking Paladin beers. Also, on busy nights, they will order food in from local restaurants. All the people in the taproom order from a menu at a specific place, and then that place will deliver it for everyone.

Also, I kind of wish they would add a few more other local beers to their taplist. Spread the love a bit I guess.

It is a great place, 100% worth checking out if you are in the area.

Cheers!

Stopped at Paladin in mid-Feb 2016… This brewery opened in August of 2015.

They had (9) of their own beers on tap… The variety was good and included an American Blonde, 2x APA’s, 2x IPA’s, Black IPA, Brown Ale, Oatmeal Stout and Scottish Ale. No guest taps.

Atmosphere was medieval themed which was cool. A fairly decent bar size with individual tables as well. No food served, it’s bring your own or they have food trucks at times. They did have snacks available, along with merch. No TV’s to be found (thankfully) and noise level was low.

The bartenders were awesome, very friendly and fun to talk with. We got offered a private tour of the brewing area which was quite impressive for being a new brewery… Being a homebrewer I asked a lot of technical questions that they excitedly answered/showed/explained. If I recall, they had a 15-bbl brewhouse with 30-bbl fermenters/bright tanks. They have some decent capacity here with room to expand.

Beer wise, the selection was solid across the board. One of the better new breweries I have been to lately.

My favorite was the American blonde “Sir Kenneth”, which was made very much like a Czech Pils with a delicious Saaz hop profile. They had a SMaSH Mosaic APA as well which was fantastic, one of the best Mosaic hopped beers I have had. Incredible flavor and aroma!

I found the other IPA’s a bit more malt heavy, but I liked them quite a bit. Very nice flavor profiles.

They do fill growlers and also do crowlers as well to go.

I highly recommend Paladin… Very cool spot in the Youngstown area!
