Now is being brewed by Allgauer Brauhaus AG, Kempten. ABV 5.3%
Pours clear mahogany beer with creamy beige head. Smell of caramel, malts, slightly bready, wooden and smoky.Taste of caramel, significantly papery, very low bitterness. Smooth and medium body, soft carbonation.
Poor dunkel.

Grotwerg, eh? Never heard of it, but there it was sitting on the shelf in Moscow's premium beer kiosk. Brewed by Memminger "for" Germania International Beverages. OK. German standard brown half-liter bottle with black, brown and red label featuring a knight in body armor holding a beer mug. The neck label featuring 1516 prominently, the year of the purity law. Ingredients comply. Best before 3/30/06, I opened it on 8/6/05.

Pours a clear dark burgundy under a firm one finger tan head with good retention and a bit of lace. The nose features caramel and raspberry, and is quite pronounced. The mouth is well carbonated and quite (too) light. The taste features mild, unassuming caramel malt, a bit too subdued at first, bordering on watery. A touch of hops emerges in the finish, but there's basically no aftertaste. There's nothing objectionable here, but nothing inspiring either. It does get a bit more interesting as it warms, but is still little more than average in taste.
