Look: Jet black, beige head with good retention and lacing
Aroma: Grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, strawberries, dark malt and chocolate
Taste: Dark malt up front then citrusy hops crash the party along with a little blueberry and finishes with a long roasty/orange/chocolate note. Fairly dry on the finish with a good bite and no alcohol heat
Mouthfeel: Thick and chewy but not too heavy or viscous and a dry finish
Overall: This is tasty and only one of a couple beers that I’ve had from these folks. One of my favorite long lost styles and this is a really solid representation. Citrusy hops add an interesting “non-pine” aspect lacking in most old school CDA/Black IPAs and it works well. A winner!

Look- the pour into a 16 oz pint glass from a can had a thinnish appearance that produced only a modest 1 1/4 finger head that disappeared far too quickly, leaving a scant lace. Acceptable for my favorite beer style.
Smell-the best attribute of a promising American Black Ale. If I had stopped here, I would not have been disappointed. The aroma was replete with the coveted pungent Citra, effusive with its juicy citrusy notes of grapefruit, lime and tropical fruit. I love this hop aroma.
Taste-was slightly cloying and a bit too rich for the style. One pint is enough. Not enough rich, earthy undertones from the darker malts, which apparently were used primarily for color.
Feel-too thin and under-carbonated. I have no idea when brewed, so it may have not been ideally fresh since feel tends to lose its impact soonest.
Overall-I wanted to love this beer. Aroma is the key to my heart, but the taste and feel were underwhelming.
