16-ounce can purchased at John's Marketplace. No date stamp. Poured into a nonic half-pint glass.
Look:
Pale gold and very clear, with a thin layer of white foam on top.
Smell:
Mostly sweet, bready malt, with some floral hops, a hint of corn, and alcohol. There's also an unexpected white wine-like fruitiness.
Taste:
Like the nose, the key player up front is a bunch of sweet and bready malt. It's a little too sweet for me, and not as clean as a Helles should be. The middle turns rather fruity, like the nose, followed by a detour into something like a Belgian pale ale, quite spicy and estery. The flavors go bland and a little watery at the finish, leaving only an uncomplicated, mildly bitter, and somewhat cloying sweetness.
Feel:
Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Something in this beer leaves my tongue a little numb.
Overall:
A German-style Helles can be an unforgiving style. It should be pale and clear, with soft, bready malt that's not too sweet, low hoppiness, and a clean finish. ColdFire German Style Helles is clear and malt forward, but is too sweet for my taste and has spicy and estery notes which are uncharacteristic and unwelcome. It is not a terrible beer, but it is hard to recommend this one when there are better examples of the style available locally.
