Raduga "Night Fever" bourbon imperial stout. (Poland)

Served on-draught in Wroclaw in Spring 2016. Cost was 14 zloty/pint.

A: Pours an attractive dark khaki colour head that sticks around for a good 8 minutes - robust and impressive. Creamy consistency, with a bit of a shiny sheen to its complexion. Leaves no lacing.

Body is, predictably, an opaque black. No yeast is visible within.

Overall, it's a nice look for a bourbon barrel imperial stout. But it's far from unique or special, and I've seen far better in the style (barrel aged and not).

Sm: Bourbon is faint, but present... maybe more time in barrels or a stronger bourbon would help address this. Muted vanilla is really the only ornamentation here in terms of bourbon character - no toastiness, no coconut, no resplendent rich white oak, etc.

Base beer wise, I detect the usual dark malt sweetness, cream, maybe some buried hints of roasted barley, and I guess some chocolate malts.

More roasted barley would help considerably, but the bigger issue here is that the aroma suggests a thin shallow brew with a simple flavour profile. I'm hoping the taste delivers more intricate flavours than are promised here.

T&Mf: The first thing I notice is that indeed the mouthfeel is poor; this is as thin and weak an imperial stout texture as I've had in the last year, failing to offer adequate body or go come off as robust to support the malt base. There's some creaminess, sure, but this just needs more weight and heft on the palate. It's even undercarbonated. Mimics all the negatives of a cask ale even though I watched as it was served on draught.

The taste is a bit better than the problematic texture, but the flavour profile is extremely shallow overall (perhaps because there's no backbone texture-wise to support it). The bourbon character is laughably absent, making me wonder just how long this spent in barrels - a fortnight, maybe, judging by taste alone.

Bourbon-less and weak in feel, the beer struggles to satisfy with only a mediocre American stout base. All I get are generic dark malts, a blip of burnt sugars, maybe some chocolate malt, and a fleeting hint of roasted barley. The result is an uneven clash of messy bitterness and malty sweetness, with each of the two winning out at alternating points in the brew's sloppy structure. Not only is it not a gestalt whole, but also it lacks basic cohesion of build.

Flavour duration is average. Flavour intensity is quite mild for an imperial stout, but on par with an American stout (which is really what this drinks like).

O: In its defense, I'll note that it does hide its ABV reasonably well. But it falls short of even an average imperial stout - let alone a bourbon barrel aged one - in both taste and texture. I'd caution others from trying it, and it's unfortunate; I bought a full pint of this optimistically thinking it was the best option on the bar's board.
