Review from notes taken in Poland in Spring 2016:
500ml bottle from a convenience store in Wroclaw. 4.30% ABV. Witbier. Best before date from back label: 24.09.2016.
A: Pours a weak off-white head and a muted dull yellow body. Anything but lively, and generally poor for a witbier appearance. Head doesn't make it to the 2 minute mark.
Sm: Lemon zest, some kind of off-putting flower like lavender, old wheat, fruit soda.
Dreadfully artificial, lacking the fresh wheat base and subtle coriander spicing you'd see in any paragon of the style. The lemon is artificial, and the flowery aroma turns me off to this. Let's hope the taste is better...
T: Matches the aroma, unfortunately. Drinks like an alcoholic fruit soda.
Mf: Way too highly carbonated, to the point where it's sharp and almost biting. Unrefreshing as a result, in spite of being smooth and wet. Oddly thick and medium-bodied where it should be light-bodied. Poor execution.
O: Possibly the worst attempt at a witbier I'll try this year. Misses the style completely, and even outside style conventions it's barely beer anyway. A witbier for the alcopop lover, Alter Beer Valkiria is destined to stay not in Valhalla, but rather on the shelf of a Polish petrol station. Poor work in every respect.
