Introduced in 1963 by the Baltimore, Maryland-based National Brewing Company, Colt 45 was named in honor of running back Jerry Hill, who was #45 on the 1963 Baltimore Colts football team. Through high-profile partnerships with actor Billy Dee Williams and comedian Redd Foxx — who both appeared in radio, print, and TV advertisements – Colt 45 established itself as the premier malt liquor beverage by the early 1970s.
It was also during this time that the iconic slogan, “Works Every Time,” became synonymous with the brand. The Williams relationship lasted for nearly four decades, until he passed the torch to music mogul, Snoop Dogg in 2010.
With Snoop at the helm, we’ve entered an exciting new Colt 45 era.

The first of our terrible beer sampling. Six beers sampled in a blind tasting. 40 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler.
Appearance - Yellow body, very clear, with a white head.
Smell - Sweet and revolting. Smells like fusel and corn.
Taste - Crisp, light, nothingness, except for the adjunct flavors that separate this from water.
Mouthfeel - Light bodied, of course, with high carbonation. It's drinkable, except for the taste. It's like drinking putrid water.
Overall - Bad, but drinkable because there's really nothing there.

Pours clear yellow, big, very light 4" head that slowly settles with little lacing. Nose is sweet corn, corn syrup, no hop character. Taste follows with yellow corn, light caramel, sweet caramel. Very little bitterness. Mouthfeel is a hint of density, small, sparkling carbonation. Overall, a really solid malt liquor.

What can I say, when I want a malt liquor night, this is one I reach for. Grabbed a 24oz can. Dated BB: Jan 2026, and it says 5.6%abv on the front. Pours a darker gold, with a creamy, white, 2 finger head. Smell, Is sweet honey, booze, malt, biscuits. No hops. Excellent mouthfeel, for a malt liquor. And lacing? Yes, I forgot there is lacing on the glass. SMOOTH. lower carbonation. After a swallow, no nasty residual off flavours. Too many cheap malt liquors, are guilty of this…not Colt45. Put away too many? You’ll feel
It. But 2-4 beers? Is a nice little session with the one that works every time. Cheers!

Quite surprised given its bad reputation. This is a crisp refreshing American Adjunct Lager that is thirst quenching. The flavor is semi sweet with a little hop bitterness. The cereals (corn) come through and combined with the fizzy carbonation make for a very pleasant quaff. The ABV is not even 6% so the bad rap it gets for "High Alcohol Content" is rubbish. I will return to this time to time when I want a nice, sweet, low bitterness effervescent brew.

This is a surprise. I haven't had this delight of a beer since my teen years and would have never considered it in a 40 oz bottle but I saw a 12 pack for $9.99 and an ABV of 5.6% which I thought seemed rather decent but not over the top like my teen years.
I am in my 50's now so it has been a long while since I had this beer. In my late teens after I wised up to crappy American domestic beers of the 80s-90s I went to mostly imports until brands like Sierra Nevada and Samuel Adams became main stream. Then I didn't drink much if at all for several years and recently started drinking again. I delved into a bunch of craft beers and was disappointed with maybe half of them.
I love a unique beer but recently I decided to try some American lagers from Hamms to Raineir, to PBR to Rolling Rock. Of course the big three. Hard to find Raineir and Hamms here unfortunately but they are really good for the cost. Coors Banquet and Miller high life are my favorite big brands and I don't even mind regular Busch beer but pretty much hate Budweiser to this day.
So I didn't have high expectations but this was actually a very decent malt liquor or strong lager. It has the corn syrup sweetness but it is not overwhelming and even a subtle hoppiness with a very crisp and clean finish. This is a very decent beer. I would not say there is anything super special about it but for a strong adjunct lagers this is good.
One thing I hate about some beers-Bud and Coors, is that after having a few they make me really tired while other beers like MHL, PBR, and a lot of others don't do. If I get sleepy drinking any alcoholic beverage I don't drink it again unless like Coors I can manage it and I really like Coors for the cost on sale.
So this has a decent ABV, tastes perfectly fine, has decent quality ingredients for what it is and it's cost.
For $9.99 MSRP on a 12 pack I will buy these a lot from now on. If you are adjunct free beer drinker why are you even reading about Colt 45? Lol.... For the rest of us, it works every time and that is no lie!
