We first brewed Volta in 2017 as we took baby steps into the world of sours! Volta is a 4.1% kettle sour with plenty of wheat, fresh rhubarb, blood orange purée and fresh orange zest. We now brew it seasonally anticipating the rhubarb harvest each winter.
Fun Volta fact: West Yorkshire is home to the Rhubarb Triangle; a nine-square-mile area between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell where fuchsia pink rhubarb is picked by candlelight between January and March each year. The Rhubarb Triangle produces 90% of the world’s forced rhubarb. The rhubarb used in Volta is sourced from E. Oldroyd & Sons in Rothwell who have harvested rhubarb using this method for five generations.

330ml can.
L: Hazy orange colour with three fingers of head that quickly reduces to a ring and leaves no lacing. As expected for the style.
S: Blood orange, lots of it.
T: Huge blood orange flavour up-front with rhubarb settling in behind. Very nicely balanced.
F: Light body with light carbonation. Mouth puckering sourness but very approachable nonetheless. Not a hint of vinegar.
O: A bright and sharp fruit beer. Lots of zest and citric acid. Very refreshing in the hot, Spring sunshine

33cl can, 1m old.
Typical for a sour small-grained fading to thin foam. Murky light yellow that has a pink taint to it against light.
Aroma is blood orange and straight lactic acid. In a subdued volume.
Taste adds a bit more tartness than what one expects from the nose. The rhubarb adds a sharper acidity that lingers after everything else fades. Fruity notes of rhubarb come out of hiding but they stay quite muted. There is a sharpness and a twang that feels like it would need something else for balance.
Overall a good marriage of the fruit and the acidity. It just would need something else as well or be smoother in aftertaste.
