We enjoyed the fruits of our labour when brewing Come in Number 51 and our West Coast DIPA with Beerbliotek so much, we've gone in for another West Coast IPA, Tunnels of LA! Featuring a simple malt grist of extra pale malt then dry hopped with Amarillo + Simcoe. Tunnels of LA has a light ester aroma, a sharp bitterness which we've raised a little higher from our latest West Coast brews and features a bouquet of floral flavour, rich pine and orange marmalade.

Shared can. Clear pale golden colour, white head. Aroma of citrussy and piney hops. Nice hoppy flavour, grapefruit and pine, well balanced.

Pours a slightly cloudy, pale golden amber coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of biscuity malt and zesty citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine, as well as a hint of pine coming through as well. Taste is a decent balance between biscuity malt and bitter, slightly floral and resinous citrus hops, with notes of grapefruit, tangerine and somewhat lighter pine. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some citrus and light pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I will admit that I'm no great fan of Amarillo hops in general, I think that they have no place in WCIPAs in particular and it baffles me everytime a brewer chooses to include them in one. While this surprisingly all right given the hop selection, with the Simcoe no doubt doing most of the heavy lifting here, it's just too floral and not quite bitter and resinous enough for my personal taste, while I would have also wished for a slightly more caramelly malt backbone. This just has that typical, somewhat floral "orange blossom" note to it that I've come to associate with Amarillo and is totally displaced in a WCIPA in my opinion. And while there is a decent, piney bitterness coming through here, I just expect a way more aggressive bitterness and resinous pine presence from a proper WC IPA. The brewer even describes a "bouquet of floral flavor" in the label notes, that's just wrong for a WCIPA! Am I wrong here? Have people actually forgotten what a proper WCIPA is supposed to taste like?
