Sampled at the brewpub, it comes out a cloudy slightly purple gold under a 1.5 finger off-white head with lots of body and good retention, leaving some great lace patterns. A mild nose emerges of sweet malts and English hops. The mouth is very prickly and fairly light. The taste features a lovely battle between sweet malt and strong dry spiced bitter. The malt has a candy tone to it that fills the mouth at first, then yields to the ultimately stronger bitter. Neither floral nor espresso, the hoppy bitterness is very herbal, just on the pleasant side of grassy. The aftertaste is acrid at the back of the throat. This is a wonderful rendition of the bitter style - it would do well on cask.
