The name is derived from the contention that most dark lagers are made dark through food coloring or other artificial darkeners, while this one is brewed purely with dark malts. The result is sheer beauty, but it really is not as dark as most "dark" beers. It comes out a slightly hazy light caramel brown under a 1.5 finger tan head with great contour and staying power. Exquisite and numerous lace rings adorn the glass. The nose is mild and sweet with caramel, growing stronger as it warms. The mouth is mildly carbonated and slightly sticky. The taste is a very smooth and delectible combination of caramel, roasted grain and dry bitterness, with an espresso edge. The hops eventually win out, leaving an acrid throb at the back of the palate. Marvellous.
