Jet black with black walnut highlights barely visible along the edges of a PBGC Malty glass. The thick, dark chestnut head retreats from two inches, gradually becoming rocky while tiny bubbles cascade upward. A nice lacing is left behind.
The chocolate aroma reaches out from the bottle, but is obscured by soapiness once it fills the glass. A light, fruity aroma punctuates faint roasted malt. I detected no bourbon or complexity in this pleasant beer. Overall it is far below my expectations.
This beer is very sweet, especially for an American Stout. Light astringency matches faint chocolate. Late in each sip, deep roasted malt briefly reveals itself. The finish is long and unpleasant. Unfortunately there is no hint of bourbon.
A medium to light body becomes full for a moment before returning to its original state. Alcohol is present, but less than expected against a soft, creamy carbonation.
While Unruly Jest is enjoyable as a typical Stout, it is disappointing if one expects the bourbon to be present. This beer needs some work. I finished it after adjusting my expectations.
