this is great beer, they call it a carolina common, but made like a steam beer from what i understand, just a bit stronger than many. what makes this is the bourbon barrels its aged in and the honeysuckle its brewed with, a new ingredient in beer for me i think, and a very cool lightness it adds to something that would otherwise be rather heavy. deep copper red color on this and lots of body but not a ton of visible carbonation. it smells like a lot of whiskey, vanilla and maple and charred oak, all real compatible with the maltier base here, faint alcohol, residual sugar, and light spice too, super unique to me. the honeysuckle is really unique in this, like honey and jasmine and clover and wildflowers, polleny and springy, a crazy contrast to the heavy malt and whiskey and wood. i wish it more carbonation but the flavor is fabulous and i like all the body with the delicate flowers here, a touch sweet but still really drinkable. tea and flowers, delicate for being heavy and whiskey forward, clever beer. these guys impressed me like crazy both for great ideas and great execution!
