Weissbrau Brauhaus "Hefeweizen" Koln.
On-draught @ the brewpub in Summer 2016. Cost was 2.40 euro/.3L.
A: Pours the usual 5cm white cap and hazy vibrant yellow-orange body. Translucent; nontransparent. Head retains well - lasting ~6 minutes.
Sm: Wheat, of course. It's quite banana-forward in terms of yeasty esters, but there's no accompanying spicy clove. I find no orange peel either.
Could come off more fresh and intricate, but it's generally appealing, and is well within style conventions.
Aromatic intensity is average.
T: Matches the aroma, with banana dominating and wheat providing the simple but effective malt backbone. No clove or orange peel here. Not the freshest tasting hefeweizen, but not stale either.
Balanced well enough. It's a conventional build, but lacks the subtlety and nuance of superior beers in the style.
Mf: Refreshing, soft, smooth, wet, refreshing, on the lighter side of medium-bodied, and overcarbonated. It's slightly too thin, to nitpick.
Not oily, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, scratchy, rough, or syrupy.
Overall presence on the palate is nice, but there's not a perfect harmony of texture and taste. The softness of the mouthfeel is the highlight here.
O: Definitely drinkable and enjoyable, but with Franziskaner available on damn near every supermarket shelf in Germany, I can't see myself buying this again. And in terms of the entire domestic market, how can this compete with untouchable favourites like Ayinger, Weihenstephaner, and the like?
