Weissbräu zu Köln "Weissbräu Wiess" reviewed from notes taken Summer 2016.
A wiessbier (not to be confused with a weissbier), which is an unfiltered Kolsch - though this one looks like any other filtered Kolsch (in contrast to Hellers' wiess, which is clearly unfiltered).
A: Pours an off white cap that dissipates within 30 seconds, leaving light lacing. Body is a clear clean yellow-copper of average vibrance.
Looks like a plain ole Kolsch. I had to confirm I actually received the wiess.
Sm: Muted and oddly dry, suggesting only faint graininess, barley, and a hint of floral hop character. Where're the crisp refreshing Munich malts and the fruity ale yeast esters?
T&Mf: Refreshing but simple (even for a Kolsch), with an oddly dry and coarse mouthfeel. Simple Munich malts, graininess, a blip of floral hop notes and that's it.
Balance isn't ideal, and the build is underwhelming. Overcarbonated, light-bodied.
I'm not so keen on this one.
O: A forgettable wiessbier, but one of the only ones I've seen thus far in Koln. Drinkable but unremarkable, this beer will fail to dazzle discerning drinkers - even those fascinated by the relative obscurity of this style.
