On-draught @ Salon Schmitz. Cost was 1.90 euro/.2L stange. Reviewed from notes taken Summer 2016.
This is an exclusive hausKolsch brewed for Schmitz by Sunner Keller.
HEAD: ~5cm wide. Fluffy, soft looking, and gorgeously frothy. Supple, with a good complexion and white colour. Retention is superb - ~7+ minutes.
BODY: Vibrant pale copper. Clean and obviously filtered, with no visible yeast particulate.
Appears well-carbonated. Appearance is good for a Kolsch, suggesting a clean crisp refreshing brew. Very inviting.
AROMA: Hop profile is more floral than most beers in the style, but I like that. Not as grassy as many Kolschbiere. Maltwise, it's a bit more robust as well - not as grainy. Fresh Munich malt, maybe some crystal malt. Perfumey and pleasant, suggesting a fuller-bodied Kolsch but nevertheless a refreshing and flavourful one.
Aromatic intensity is above average for a Kolsch.
TASTE & TEXTURE: I like the floral hop character, but the malty sweetness is too much, disrupting the balance. Munich malt, maybe some heavier caraMunich malts. It ends up too full-bodied and even a biteen syrupy - the opposite of the refreshing light body and delicate feel you'd want in a good Kolsch.
Well-carbonated. Smooth and wet, but unrefreshing on account of its heft and weight on the palate.
O: It's a decent build for a Kolsch, but misses the hyperdrinkability and refreshing crispness associated with the finest expressions of the style. Worth trying if you're at Schmitz for their food, but I wouldn't go out of your way for it.
