Vetter Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus “Dunkels Hefeweizen”
€3,40/,3L at the brewery on 22 September 2021
Look: Cloudy deep amber beneath a full head of off-white foam that holds very well and leaves wide, bent and craggy streaks of lacing behind.
Smell: Yeasty; phenolic; sweet wheaty malt; banana; clove.
Taste: The flavor follows the aroma with an added hint of acidity and a plastic-like phenolic in the background. Moderately bitter but still semi-dry in the finish.
Feel: Medium bodied and zesty.
Overall: A slightly unique Hefe Dunkel that’s satisfying and refreshing.

On-tap at Vetter Brauhaus, Heidelberg, Germany
A: The beer is quite hazy dark caramel amber in color. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down, leaving a narrow collar around the edge of the glass, a patch of bubbles on the surface and lacy rings of bubbles around the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of wheat are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of wheat and a light amount of sweet dark malts. There are fainthints of bananas from the yeast.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This dunkle is easy to drink, but doesn’t seem as fruity compared to other beers in the style.
Serving type: on-tap

A basic hefe brewed for the masses-tourists-visiting a beautiful city. Soft aromas, spice, banana, grains. Nothing stands out in a good or bad way. Very drinkable and enjoyable. You'll like it if you like hefes.

Looks delicious like all beer. Copper colored with a nice finger head that lingers. Bready and yeasty smell and taste. Not any distinct fruit to speak of. Very smooth and pleasant mouthfeel. Solid straightforward beer without complexity.

Pours two fingers of head on a cloudy dark straw body.
The aroma is barnyard and nutty.
The taste is balanced mild bitterness with a tame sweet note.
The texture is smooth.
That is a nicely balanced dunkel.

40 cL at the original (only?) location in Heidelberg.
Cloudy brown, looks like muddy water. Great head but light on lace. Aroma of cloves, earth, and sassafras. Soft on the front with more carbonation on the finish. Flavor starts out malty with same clove and, to a lesser extent, root beer, characteristics but fades in the finish. Some acidity and bitterness on the back of the tounge. Medium-heavy body.

A - The color a well tanned college girl returning from Spring Break in Cabo. Good times.
S - Faint strawberry and honey.
T - Honey dew melon with a slight banana finish.
M - Appropriate for a dunkelweizen
D - Seems overly alcoholic for the style. Good for a pint or two.

Decent darkish hefeweizen tasted at the brewpub in Heidelberg.
Cloudy in the glass with a nice creamy head. Color is a brownish amber, a lighter shade than is typical for dunkels. Some clove and fig flavors, bread, and green apples. Typical murky wheat flavors and quite malty. Nicely carbonated on the tongue. A bit hoppier than other German wheat beers. Tastes a bit sour at first but mellows eventually.
Not a standout, but a perkier than average dunkel that whets the appetite.

A promising weizen dunkel. Dunkel is dunkel. Two fingers of a beige foam.
In the smell a light banana, a hint of cloves, malt, yeast. Quite full.
A good fullness in the taste too, well balanced. A good beer, with all the notes of a good dunkel weizen, but without anything too strong. Pleasant.
Not too strong aftertaste, wih caramel, similar to the taste.
Normal body.

I had this on-tap at the brauhaus on March 29, 2006.
A: Murky brown; White head, plenty of lace, but not much retention.
S: Bready malt, slight hint of fruit (citrus?).
T: Bready, slightly sweet (caramel), light banana (mostly in the aftertaste).
M: Light body is creamy; carbonation is light to moderate.
D: Very good.
