I found this to be a brew for satisfying masses of tourist. Not a bad thing, just if you are looking for something special, this isn't it. This is a great drinking brew. Not sure what happened for the other reviewer that had the skunky version of this brew. I found the aroma to be malty as was the taste. It was smooth and balanced. Easy drinking. A good winter brew. Get it with the goulash soup. Yum.

Had on tap at the Vetter Alt Heidelberger Brauhuas Neuenheim. This is not to be confused with their other doppelbock on tap: Vetter's 33.
Pouring an amber-brown color with a moderate head, this doppelbock packs a very strong nose. Lots of caramel malts and a bit of hops, the aroma was a little sweet, but also rotten smelling. Although this was a complex nose, it was so off putting it was downright unpleasant.
The taste was quite complex and well balanced with a hoppy mouth. This is much less malty than I usually expect from a doppelbock; there were no discernable traces of the sweet plums flavors or the German malts I traditionally associate with this variety. Considering the strong malts in the nose, this surprised me. In place of the strong malts was a greater hop presence, as well as the flavors of potato chips.
A fairly drinkable lager (if you don't spend too much time smelling it), this is a well made doppelbock, but if you are visiting Vetter's, there are enough other exceptional beers on tap that sampling this doppelbock should not be a priority.
