I tried a can out today, out of curiosity.
If I hadn't looked up who brews this, I wouldn't have known it was an 'own brand' beer.
It's pleasant enough, without knocking my socks off, and at 5%, it compares adequately with other 5% beers.
The taste and smell are inoffensive although in my opinion, it lacks bite.
If you ignore the 'own brand' stigma, then the only reason not to buy it is other established brands, such as Sagres and Super Bock, aren't that much more expensive. Note to Continente: Reduce the price of Gutbier, do not increase the price of the others!!

I am in Portugal and trying some local beers. Poured from a 16.9 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is malts, grains, very easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Font Salem Portugal / Modelo Continente Hipermercados S.A. "Gutbier"

Notes via stream of consciousness: I can't say that I'm excited to try this beer because I've had so many bad supermarket beers in the past but let's give it a go. Oh, also, "Gutbier" translates to "good beer" from German, and if you have to tell someone it's good it's probably not. Anyway, it's poured a mostly clear straw-gold body beneath a thumb's width of bright white foam. The aroma is clean but limited. This is an adjunct beer (maize) so I wasn't expecting much in the way of malt but there's less than I thought there would be. As for hops I was barely expecting anything and that's basically what I got. It is brewed with real hops as opposed to hop extract though, so there's that. On to the taste... it's got a fair amount of apple-like fruitiness to it for being a lager but it's not too bad. The bitterness that's there is a little rough but it is generally on the sweeter side of things. The can cost me .69 €uros and you can tell, but let me defend this one. When I review beers on a scale of 1 to 5, I consider a 3 to be a world-wide, global average beer and this is much better than some of those that have had massive defects and other issues. This kept its head and left some decent lacing behind and that's not always the case. It also doesn't smell bad; it might not smell great but it isn't off-putting. The taste is the same, not bad but not great, and at least the alcohol isn't popping out at me at 5% which has happened before. Finally, the mouthfeel of almost every beer, unless there's something really wrong with it (astringency, acidity, too much residual yeast), is usually pretty good. This is a price-point beer for the bungled and the botched, those who've fallen prey to the demon alcohol, or whom's fortune lost its way along the path. There are people in some 3rd world countries that have the money to buy quality beer but they can't because it's just not available. This is about as low as we go above that so take it for what it is. I drank about half of it and I'm going to toss it. .69 €uros lost? Or .69 €uros worth of wisdom gained?
