Had on tap at Claimstake Brewing in Rancho Cordova, CA
Appearance - Served up in a 13oz snifter, near black with dark auburn brown edging. Thin, broken layer of suds with a small ring around the edge of the glass.Fair lacing with broken webbing, lines and spotting.
Smell - Mild aroma, but picking up hints of toffee, chocolate, caramel, copper and leafy tea.
Taste - Follows the nose, though more strongly. Toffee upfront and throughout, with hints of chocolate and caramel, followed quickly by some leafy tea-like bitterness that overtakes the sweetness.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with low-to-moderate carbonation. Slick drinker, goes down easy before a dry and belly warming finish.
Overall - I'm not really sure what makes is 'Norwegian' specifically, but damn if this isn't a fantastic representation of a big European porter. My only complaint is that I'm not picking up any rye, and its described as a Norwegian Imperial Rye Porter. Maybe it'll show up with a bit of age on it?
