Appearance - Pours deep, dark brown with a thin, tan head. Sub-par retention before settling to a mostly barren surface. No lacing to really speak of.
Smell - Coffee roast, sugary chocolate frosting, and vanilla cream.
Taste - Starts with a bit of coffee roast and chocolate, then cream, vanilla and sugar kick in. Sugary sweetness maintains a firm grip hold throughout. The chocolate and coffee play off each other nicely, but that the sweetness prevails, even through to the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Medium-to-full body with low-to-fair carbonation. Slightly sticky body that becomes a bit stickier with the drying finish. Goes down easy enough.
Overall - Reminds me of their recent Cuppa Mocha, and not in a good way. Coffee is there, as is cream and chocolate, but the residual sugary sweetness is entirely prevalent, and maybe more menacing than the latter brew. Love ya Claimstake, but these sugary sweet coffee brews ain't working for me. For the record, I do drink my coffee straight black, but I've also had plenty of pastry stouts that don't have all this residual sugary sweetness I'm tasting here. Not so terrible, but nothing I'd wanna drink again.
