Had on-tap at Claimstake Brewing in Rancho Cordova, CA
Appearance - Served up in a can shaped glass, near black with deep, dark ruby where light can penetrate. Tan, thin bd broken layer of suds across the surface, forming a thin, consistent circle around the outer edge. Lacing is good, with broken sheeting, lines and small spotting.
Smell - Ashy smoke and roast, peppermint, and citrus.
Taste - Starts with a clash of that roasty smokiness and the cooling qualities of peppermint. Lesser orange adds to the funk, like drinking OJ after brushing one's teeth.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with fair carbonation. Slick on the tongue before a slightly dry finish.
Overall - The OG Pappa Steve was fairly smokey and citrusy. Adding peppermint clashes flavors that don't play nicely together. Rare miss from Claimstake. It was an experimental keg that really just didn't pan out, at least for me.
