Copenhagen 14/3 2023. 40 cl from tap at Taphouse, Lavendelstræde, Kbh. K.

Pours opaque dark brown with a small light beige head. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, dark, malty odor mingling with earthy, sourish notes. Dark chocolate, brown sugar and toffee.

Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, soft, creamy, smooth texture. Peat and leather. Dark alcohol.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly more moderate bitterness. Aftertaste bitter-sour with a sweet undertone. Lingering. Finish is rather dry.

Potent boozy powerhouse.

CAN
Rock solid sepia cap over jet black; lots of molasses on the nose that suddenly shifts to peat smoke; brown sugar syrup, prune, latte, and a thread of smoke; chewy, smooth, low carb.

Syrupy - loads of unfermented sugars. That’d be in style *if* there was any roast here: the smoke is restrained, to its credit, but that + the Columbus are not doing a good job of keeping the sweetness in check. Also, WLP007 is too clean to throw off the esters that FES calls for. Some nice licorice notes, and drinkable enough. but not what I’m looking for.

Whiplash needs to stop making stouts without roast.
