Viscous ebony with pile of moussy taupe froth; milk chocolate truffles, bourbon, fig jam, and aged oak on the nose; baker’s chocolate, licorice, slight soy, black currant, espresso, touch of wood and brown sugar finish; med-full, creamy, slight burn.
4 4.25 4 4 4
There’s a lot to notice here: how much the aroma recalls not just Cadbury’s, but all sort of milk chocolate: sprinkles, icing, ice cream. How low the roast is in favour of a more layered flavour profile. How much the barrel has stepped back after 5 years. How much the booziness hasn’t.
How the hint of autolysis is creeping in.
This is a totally decent fireplace sipper that, in a market that’s an arms race of barrel, adjunct and ever higher ABV, is likely to get totally lost. Even judging the simple base beer, there are better examples: the recipe seems to go for a subtler layered malt bill at the expense of impact. And it wasn’t worth sitting on for 5 years, but only because the competition is so fierce.
But Alex made good stouts, perhaps more consistently than any other style, and he’ll be missed for that.
A very good stout that never reaches greatness.
