CAN
Stiff leggy sepia foam over viscous tan-tinged black; ash, prune and burnt sugar nose; char, espresso grounds, brown sugar, praline, black grape, sweet licorice, twig; chewy, med-full, tightening bitter linger.
4.25 4 3.75 4 4
Looks and smells the part.
Starts with a touch of roast, then slides into a lot of sweet, pastry note - brownies - where I’m expecting sultanas, before finishing with surprising bitterness. I suspect a dose of brown malt in there somewhere - Whiplash like their brown - which is edging this toward strong English stout territory. I get the cherry mentioned in the commercial description, but overall it’s missing a whole bunch of dark fruit.
Smooth - Whiplash stouts are especially pillowy, I’ve been noticing - clean, well-executed; the quality is never in doubt.
But too off style + off balance for the ABV, to me.
Nice, but just not *black* enough.
