This beer was a collaboration with Toronto’s Martini-Club. The challenge was to brew a beer that brought to life a classic cocktail. We reviewed a number of classic drinks before settling on the Old Fashioned. This beer was double-brewed. First a small-batch was brewed, aged on wood, and used to make a ‘bitters’, which were then blended into a larger batch of the original recipe.

650 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Review from notes. Cost was approximately $10 CDN.
Appearance - Fairly clear with a dark golden color. The whitish head appears foamy and frothy akin to a nitro pour. Impressive finger and half lasts a while.
Smell - Rye, lots of malt and some vanilla. Marshmallows too. Some earthy and hot rye aromas again. Subdued while cold, but improves as it warms.
Taste - Smooth and malty, Rather sweet with vanilla and marshmallows again. Mixed drink-esque which appears to be the intended goal, Less rye and less hoppy than expected. Spicy rye grain to finish though.
Mouthfeel - Very smooth and alcohol hidden nicely. Medium dry finish and lighter than expected body.
Overall - Not a beer for everyone with the mixed drink like feature, but an interesting taking and certainly packs a punch. Better than expected, although not quite enjoyable enough (personal tastes) to pick up another bottle.
