An imperial porter brewed with a hefty dose of local maple syrup, and Kenyan coffee beans from our good friends Monigram Coffee Roasters here in Cambridge.

Got this one from hopsolutely this past summer. Thanks, guys!
From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Imperial Porter with coffee and maple syrup
APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a 2+ finger, thinner and bubbly looking, noisy, light tan head with okay retention. Bistre brown body with higher levels of carbonation for the style. Head fades to a full, foamy cap and clings to the glass, eventually making its way to a ring only. A slight ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass. Body was fine but the head a little lack luster.
SMELL: Raw maple syrup, C grade perhaps, with light notes of coffee, dark fruit notes, such as raisins and dates, and some hints of milk chocolate. Medium strength.
TASTE: Mild burnt coffee up front with some low grade maple syrup, dark fruity sweetness, touches of milk chocolate and some alcohol at the swallow. Flavorful and plenty of spicy notes and dark fruit sweetness. A bold finish is boozy with milk chocolate, some creamy flavors, touches of low grade syrup, dark, fruity sweetness and some lightly roasted coffee bitterness lingers on the palate.
PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some spicy alcohol lingers.
OVERALL: Well, for some reason I’d expected more of this. I love the combination of maple syrup and coffee but this one didn’t really deliver. The coffee was very faint and the maple syrup wasn’t all that present either. I’m actually a fan of low grade syrup but I could have used more. I am sure the brewers will say that they didn’t want the adjuncts to overrule the beer, which is fine. The base porter is actually alright, with some good milk chocolate and dark fruit sweetness to enjoy. A decent beer but doesn’t really live up to the description. Thanks again, guys!
