Looks like I have a treat on my hands with this one....retired, and no listing for it on Barncats' website......
A- This one pours a fairly opaque brown color, with reddish hues in the background. The head is a light caramel colour, shows off fairly dense and has nice retention, starting about a finger thick and settling down to a thick film/ring over top the liquid, and as per the head, I'm guessing the carbonation is fine and plentiful. The lacing is frothy, dense and clings rather well to the inside of my glass....overall this looks really well!
S- Big boozy aromas linger long after the initial pour, with heavy woodsy wine barrel, Cabernet/Merlot nuances, blended sweet caramel/toffee like malts, blended with heavier charred varieties like chocolate. Speaking of chocolate, I detect red wine spritzer creme filled Christmas chocolates.....overall it smells bold
T- Wow the flavors are very much like what the aromas set as an expectation.....lots of winey flavor, with some tang on the end after the swallow. Plenty of alcohol, that provides a somewhat metallic character, and I agree with the previous post that this doesn't have a great balance on the palate....the maltiness is lost on me.
M/O- I would put this in the medium body category, and the carbonation is rather smooth overall. As far as drinkability goes, this is definitely a sipper and after one can, that is more than enough for me! I think this would be better used as an ingredient in a beef stew or in a Bordelaise/Provencale sauce. Glad I had the opportunity to try this, but I don't think I would get this again if it became available....maybe would try a fresh can and share....maybe....

Can: Poured a murky hazy amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with light retention and some lacing. Aroma of grainy malt notes with some very strong vinous notes. Taste is mix of heavily caramelized grainy notes with some strong vinous notes and some oak notes are also perceptible. Body is full with good carbonation with some warming notes from the alcohol. Not the most drinkable barleywine and vinous notes are not well harmonized with peculiar malt base.
