500 ml bottle served fairly cold into a tumbler. This is Rat Queen that is bourbon barrel aged and has pumpkin spice added in. I have no idea what to expect. No bottling date and on the expensive side from Durand.
Appearance - Dark brown from the bottle and black in the glass. A finger of tan and relatively short lived foamy head is poured. Small collar of foam lasts a little while longer.
Smell - Lots of pumpkin spice, with some earthy pumpkin notes, cinnamon and nutmeg as well as some roasty notes, suggestions of vanilla and a coffee aromatic in the background.
Taste - Big and boozy, bitter and full of spice at first but that recedes lending chocolate vanilla and some sweeter pumpkin flavoring in. Marshmallows and milk chocolate in there with coffee on the next layer. Bourbon flits around throughout and shows most prominently at the front and in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Fully bodied and boozy, more carbonated and less slick than expected, but there is some chewy character.
Overall - An impressive stout that has somehow managed to capture so many different elements (bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, pumpkin and a sweet adhesive like marshmallows). With that said, it's not the most cohesive of beers, there might be one too many elements going on. Still a worthy tipple and perhaps a near pinnacle for how much different stuff and disparate flavors can be crammed into a single brew.
