In the late nineteenth century American brewers, primarily of German and Czech descent, began to incorporate uniquely American ingredients such as corn into their recipes for the “new” pilsner style beer. This bright gold colored beer, with its crisp flavor had taken the world by storm since it was first brewed in the Czech city of Pilsen in 1842. Our Prohibition Pilsner harkens back to this time when first generation immigrants brewed beers that reminded them of home.

16 oz can into a pilsner glass. Slightly hazy pale golden color with a half-finger foamy white head. Smells of wet grass, bread, and earthy hops. Similar taste, grassy hop bitterness with some lemon citrus. Light bodied and crisp.

Pale straw, slight haze, with tight half finger white head. Aroma is slight lemony hops. Taste follow the nose, slight lemony hops with a long lingering lemon rind bitterness. Body is light to medium with medium high carbonation. Fairly one note. Good for a hot day.

Had on tap. I thought the pour was nice enough, with a decent carbonation. The smell has typical pilsner malt, slight german hops with a distinct breadiness, and a mixture of lemongrass and flowers. The taste was jumbled though, with the malt, lemongrass and herbal flavors combining to feel medicinal. Decent, but no need to have again

Too malty and herbal. Kind of a lot of skunk for a pils. Lot of head on this one.

Draft at the brewery, and a contract-brewed can the next day. Can dated 5/30/17.

Pale brassy gold with bright clarity, persistent rising carb trails. Fluffy head with nice retention and lasting surface coverage. Sticky lacing adheres to the glass in chunky concentric rings.

Floral hop aroma, lightly grassy, some doughy bread yeast.

Taste is similar, moderate grassy hop bitterness lingers into the aftertaste. Bitter dandelion greens, floral hops.
Smooth creamy texture, finishes clean with a long lingering hop bitterness. Ample carbonation with a light body.

Overall this is very solid and well put together. Hoppier than most German or Czech Pils, the American way. This is on par locally with Dovetail's Hopfenlager, but a bit creamier and more nuanced. Great stuff.

16oz can, date stamped 07/20/17
Pilsner-esque look with a slightly hazed golden body and a frothy white head. Grassy hops with grainy pilnser malt and lager yeast for aroma. Sharp grassy and spicy hops provide moderate bitterness with a biscuity pale pilsner malt backbone. Lighter body, higher carbonation, finishing bitter and semi-crisp with hop bitterness lingering somewhat more than I'd like. Overall, decent German Pilsner, but nothing I'd buy again.

Pours a bright yellow color. Completely clear and effervescent. Frothy white head dissipates steadily leaving behind no residual head or lacing.

Smell is sweet with some floral grassy hops and a cracker and what smells like corn malt base coming through.

Taste has some sweetness with some bitter grassy hops and floral notes. Pilsner/cracker malt base comes through. As it warms the sweetness and grassy bitterness becomes more pronounced. Solid example of the style.

Feel is crisp but not as light as I'd like as the sweetness adds some heft. In spite of the sweetness, the finish is dry and bitter.

Overall a nice German Pilsner. Not the best I've had, but for an American example of the style its one of the better ones.

Update 6/11/17:

Had this one in their new 16 ounce cans as brewed by Great Central Brewing. The canned beer is crisper, the hops pop more, less of the doughy bready malts as it's far more hop forward. The beer also comes across cleaner. Ratings updated to reflect new cans.
