DATE: August 3, 20118... OCCASION: beginning the birthday weekend with Battle Bots and something strong... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... piecing this review together from notes made after my phone lost the original experience... with Jer visiting, I let him pick one, and this is what he chose: a beer whose groove is subtle and surreptitious... medium-bodied yet abuzz with bourbon promise, it offers cherry, butterscotch, dank resin, caramel malts, and sweet sugars to fulfill its heavy aromatic promise... that introduction is basement funk, horse blanket, citrus orchard and wood mill--a myriad of locales represented here... something keeps me from fully embracing this, though my apprehension may be found in its smoothness through the throat--something so easily won cannot be so well worth it, no? Yet the fire it lights is late coming, and when it burns, there is no going back... a bit of toasted malts attempts a balance, but this only stokes the char and resin... a heavy beer worth its weight--one that bears pairing with the Booty Chaser... interestingly, both sport 105 IBUs, but at least this one doesn't quite pitch the over-the-top hops that number should conjure... still, RESPECT...
