neat concept here, recreate a legend from a local homebrewer, love when that happens. this is my first from bleeding heart and a treat to get to try from a crowler smuggled down from alaska. its a nice beer, lighter in color than anticipated, more of a deep brown than closer to black, short but dense tan head on it, eggshell shine, decent viscosity. the nose is quite sweet, the molasses evident, i like that raw unrefined sugar character, and its not subtle, hints of root beer, licorice spice, and earthy smoke hover around it, and there is a little coffee thing too. the flavor is solid too, sweet for sure but thats to be expected with the molasses, enough roasted bitterness and drip coffee low end for it to present as somewhat balanced, notes of raisin and chewy date, a hint of rum even as it warms and some alcohol comes up, milk chocolate, birch syrup, and some loosely english ale yeast there in the background. pretty good depth and complexity for it not being all that dark, good body to it, a little sticky sweet but it works with the flavors, and maybe a touch light on carbonation, but again, it fits the style. cool effort overall, neat concept, ill look forward to more from these guys when i get the chance. a generous share from a new friend, thanks mate!
