Black like the ocean on a moon-less night, this delicious IPA expertly blends the roast character of a decadent dark malt bill with the pine and citrus of Simcoe and Talus hops.

Purchased at the Bells Beach Brewery Bar in September 2024 and drunk a few weeks later.
L: Inky black in the glass, with a cm-high, creamy, mocha-coloured head. There are lots of tiny bubbles streaming up the glass.
S: The nose is rich, dark, burnt grain and a touch of bitter coffee.
T: There's a burnt, roasty and bitter coffee note, like the nose, but none of the expected sharp, acrid bitterness that often comes with black IPAs, and to my mind, it's a little worse for the lack of that note. There's also a sweetness, like vanilla cola, that becomes more obvious because of that lack of acrid bitterness, and which also seems to dominate the taste profile as the beer warms. Tangy, citrusy hops round everything off.
M: The body is smooth and full, and carbonation is minimal.
O: I love that a back IPA has been brewed because this style is criminally underrepresented. I think, however, that this one has dialled back the bitterness, perhaps to cater to less bitter-loving palates that seem to predominate these days, and that's a knock on this one for me.
Cheers!

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
