473ml can poured into Sam Adams pint glass.

Pours a clear copper with half a finger of off-white head that leaves skeletal grin lace as it recedes.

Smells of caramel biscuit, citrus zest, apple and mild leafy, piney hops.

Tastes of more sweet doughy caramel malt, muddled citrus rind, soft resin and more mildly bitter green hopiness.

Feels nice and fluffy. Medium-light bodied with frothy carbonation. Finishes off-dry.

Verdict: Recommended. Nice and light, good for summer.

473ml can, from a not-yet built new Calgary brewery - and hey, they state right on the label that this is being made at Dead Frog in BC (they of the seemingly unlimited excess capacity) - what a concept! Cheers to that!

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some splattered tree branch lace around the glass as it gently subsides.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, a twinge of biscuity toffee, muddled pome fruit notes, a hint of wet ash, and plain leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is lightly toasted caramel malt, further biscuity cereal notes, some red apple, generic citrus, and underripe green pear fruitiness, a hint of wayward yeast, and more understated leafy, floral, and piney hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite easy-going in its lackadaisical frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, nothing really standing up here to oppose the notion, as such. It finishes well off-dry, the sort of complex malt starting to appear to be on its own milk run.

Overall, not a bad pale ale, and considering its origins and some of its trailblazers in this style of initial brewery start-up around here, I'm happy to say that this is rather drinkable, with no obvious cut corners or other sundry penny-pinching indicators. A solid stand-in until the real deal arrives - again, promised right on the freaking label!
