Old Stove Brewing Co.

This is a brewery in the basement of Pike Place Market. Spectacular views of Elliott Bay with reasonable prices on nice quality beer and food. Beer selection was a good collection of many styles.

 

I visited Old Stove when they just had their tap room (a placeholder) until they finished their new location overlooking the bay. If you are looking for an experience that combines good beer, great food, vintage beer advertising and a magnificent view-drop by Old Stove. A memorable place to experience Seattle and it's amazing craft beer scene.

 

 

a neat spot right below the pike market area, on the water, and absolutely packed on a friday afternoon when i was in. i managed to snag the only vacant seat at the bar and dig in. the place is enormous, with a huge dining room area, a big patio overlooking the water with huge glass windows all around giving great views from just about any seat in the house. they had to have five people working behind the bar, and as busy as they were, the service was excellent. some equipment visible when you walk in or out, and it smells like a brewery for sure. cool vibe in here, rather unique, and with a ton of energy. the beer list was neat, not wildly intriguing, but something for every palate i would think. they had a mix of old school styles and basic beers, and then some more ambitious stuff. i enjoyed a traditional german pils and was much less stoked about an over hopped new england ipa, but i didnt have time to go any deeper down the list than that. everyone there seemed to be enjoying it pretty well. i had a bowl of clam and bacon chowder that was killer too, really good, and the rest of the food menu looked rad as well, recommended spot for some grub for sure. overall it wasnt a very intimate experience, felt a little corporate with the business and the way it was run so mechanical almost, but ill never complain about an overly efficient kitchen or service. beer was average in my experience, but ill try more of them next time. good enough to go back, and the location cannot be beat! a patio seat is the move.

Loved this place, right in Pike Place Market. Pretty packed, but we got a table no problem. The wait staff was working hard, but the service was slow because of how many people were there. In any Case The Two Pronged IPA and Jesus Brewed This IPA were really great along with the pretzel bites (with Beecher's cheese dip!). Highly recommend you stop here; we were going through the market and decided to take a little pit stop. Absolutely worth it!

Good beer and food. The French Dip and the Charcuterie are very, very good.

 

They have a fairly large area in the space underNeath the Pike Market, with an open view to the bay.long bar across the space then tables to sit. Modern industrial feel (open beams,exposed piping, unfishined wood). Speakers are cranking 80's metal, must be the Iron Maiden Pandora channel or similar). Service was fast, but with no pleasantries. They had about 10 of their beers, plus a guest cider. Decent variety of styles. The DIPA I. Drank was good. Food selection was limited to snacks, we didn't have any.

Right in the market area. Great view with an open front facing Elliot Bay. Bartender gave me attitude when I asked for some water too. Beer was decent, nothing great. But come here for the view.

 

 

Vibe - due to it's location near the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, there was plenty of indecisive tourists hovering about. Pointing at the menu and items, and simply taking too long to make a selection. This isn't exactly surprising but the mix of people seemed like it was completely clueless visitors and a number of regulars. The place had a feel right between corporate and local.

Quality of the place was good. Everything was clean, with a good bit of tables and booths available indoors. There was also outdoor seating available so the place could accommodate a good group of people comfortably. Even though the tables were all taken up, there was still plenty of space between them that it didn't feel quite so crowded.

Service was relatively quick at the bar once you were able to place your order with three employees working the area. There was also an individual walking around and clearing tables of empty glasses. Only issue was, again, the indecisiveness of the clientele which slowed things down a bit. This certainly is no fault of the establishment or a negative reflection on the service.

Selection of beer was approximately 15 or so, with mostly IPAs and saisons being available, so not bad. But the menu was primarily IPAs and saisons. If you don't like either of those two styles, you're going to be very limited on your choice. Also, out of the IPAs and saisons that I had, the quality of the beers was OK.

I did not order food so I cannot comment on it, but I did see chefs whipping things up behind the bar area and the food did look good when it was brought out to the tables around me.

Overall, this wouldn't be a place I would say is a must stop for out of town visitors to Seattle who are looking specifically for the best of Seattle local breweries. But if you're near Pike Place and feel like stopping in at a brewery that's within walking distance, this would suffice. For higher quality beer and unique experience, I would recommend walking just a further bit north and stopping in at Cloudburst Brewing instead.

 

 

 

Being near the tourist trap of the Pike Place Market sure has its advantages. I was mindlessly walking down First Street when a brewery with an open-air feeling caught my eye. A small patio jets onto the sidewalk, inside Old Stove's interior makes the most of the limited space it has. Not only a relatively new brewery, but there are signs of nostalgia thanks to retro beer ads being played on a nearby TV screen, and 50 year old collectible beer cans on display.

16 taps behind the bar, with 13 pouring at the time house beer. Several IPA's pouring, also a citra pale ale (good wake up call to me), brown ale, saison (tastes like afternoon delight), pilsner, Cascadian dark ale, and wee heavy, plus a guest beer. $6 pours for all the beers, and with graceful, branded glassware, Old Stove has that glassware thing pinned. To top off the experience, a well staffed (5 bartenders behind the bar) and hospitable group of employees explained to me that their brewhouse is a floor below the tasting room, and offered their options of the beer they were pouring. While still a young brewery, Old Stove hits all the points home.

 

I visited Old Stove this week and I'll definitely be going back. It's a neat taproom with a good brewery vibe and a literal "old stove" theme; I dig it. There are a couple of TVs, but they were playing old-timey beer ads the whole time (think Schlitz and Hamm's ads from the 60s). Service was pretty standard for a bar, but was friendly enough. They had 10 or so beers on tap plus a guest cider, not at all bad for a brand-new brewery. There were some interesting beers and the ones I tried were darn tasty. Totally worth visiting.
