Darker than you'd expect for a pale ale. Both the smell and flavor deliver a wonderful balance of smoke along with the base beer. Not bitter at all. Very reminiscent of a rauchbier but yet still unique, likely due to it being the hops and not the malts that were smoked. Great complexity. The best beer we had in our flight and a really good beer by any measure. Way more complex, interesting, and well put together than you'd expect from a brewery this new.
There are some bad ratings for this beer elsewhere; if you think of it as a rauchbier it's awesome but if you're expecting a standard pale ale you're probably going to be confused/disappointed.
